On the day briefing: Labour's Health Mission

On 22 May 2023, the leader of the Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer, delivered a speech announcing the party’s mission to “build an NHS fit for the future”. This is one part of Labour’s 5 Missions for a Better Britain, which will form the basis of its general election manifesto.

Sir Keir and the shadow health and social care secretary, Wes Streeting, promised to build an NHS fit for future use, that is there when people need it, works to prevent loss of life to the biggest killers, and that ensures everyone lives healthier for longer. The mission goals are based around three areas of change:

  1. Change so that more people get care at home in their community
  2. Change so that we have the workforce we need, with the modern technology to deliver the best healthcare
  3. Change so that we focus on prevention

This briefing summarises the key announcements from the speech, Labour’s accompanying technical document and NHS Providers’ response.
