Malware attack: need for a proper perspective

15 May 2017

Patients have been urged to use the NHS “wisely” as the full effects of the global cyber attack which affected a number of NHS trusts become clear.

As of Monday 15 May, seven NHS trusts are still experiencing severe issues as a result of the attack.

So far, in total, the virus has infected 200,000 machines in a range of industries and organisations across 150 countries.

Responding to the latest developments relating to the global cyber attack, the chief executive of NHS Providers, Chris Hopson, said:

“We feel it is important to put a proper perspective on the malware attack. This is not something that is specific to the NHS. It has affected 200,000 computer systems in 150 countries. The attack has affected leading edge companies including FedEx, Telefonica, Nissan and Deutsche Bahn.

“It’s worth pointing out that 80 per cent of NHS trusts were not affected. However, 20 per cent were, so clearly we will need to work out what has happened, and learn from this event. But the quick rush by some to lay the blame on “incompetent NHS managers” is disappointing. It feels like the usual NHS bashing and is unsupported by evidence. This unfortunate blame game may in part be down to the fact that we are in the middle of a general election campaign.

It’s worth pointing out that 80 per cent of NHS trusts were not affected. However, 20 per cent were, so clearly we will need to work out what has happened.

“We are not involved in managing this incident, but clearly we must concentrate now on getting all services back up and running, and then look calmly at the evidence and learn the appropriate lessons.

“Let’s also spare a thought for all the amazing NHS staff who spent their weekend recovering IT services and – where needed – managing without those services. Thanks also to patients who are bearing with the disruption. Most services are now back to normal, but people should check NHS Choices for details.”
