COVID-19 variant testing introduced in parts of the country
01 February 2021
- A specific variant of COVID-19 has been identified in the ME15 area of mid-Kent.
- Door to door coronavirus testing will begin on 2 February.
- Everyone aged 16 and over will be asked to carry out a PCR test there and then, to be sent to laboratories for analysis.
Commenting on surge testing being introduced in parts of the country, chief executive Chris Hopson said:
"It is a real concern that cases of the South African variant of COVID-19 have been found with no known links to travel or previous cases.
"We would urge everyone who is asked to take tests to give their full support to this vital work.
"This is a reminder that the threat from the pandemic is real and potent.
"None of us can afford to relax our guard.
"It's never been more important for everyone to play their part by following the rules to keep cases down so the NHS can provide the best possible care for all patients, COVID and non-COVID."
