Board development programme: Effective challenge, December 2024
Date: 11 December 2024
Time: 09:30
Venue: Virtual event via Zoom
Course overview
The role of a unitary board is to formulate the organisation’s strategy, ensure delivery of annual strategic objectives, and shape a healthy organisational culture, whilst considering the wider integrated health and care context in which the organisation is operating. Effective and constructive challenge, scrutiny and support throughout the governance framework are essential if the board is to achieve these responsibilities.
The absence of effective challenge has often been found to be a contributory factor in high profile NHS governance failures, but difficult operating environments can result in organisations leaning towards becoming more supportive thereby reducing the level of challenge. Alongside this, the introduction of system partnerships alongside organisational accountabilities, exposes organisations to increased and new risks. Therefore, the ability to have effective and courageous conversations both within and outside of organisational boundaries will be essential for any high performing organisation.
This practical course aims to develop skills of effective, constructive challenge and holding to account through clarifying the role and responsibilities of the unitary board along with the opportunity to explore different approaches to questioning.
