Course overview

The current challenges facing the NHS today means that time is an increasingly precious commodity and all meetings need to be optimised to meet objectives.

This practical training is designed to develop the chairing skills of board members, senior executives and managers who chair board or committee meetings within NHS trusts and foundation trusts.

During the training there will be the opportunity to not only learn from peers but to participate in interactive exercises to explore good practice in the chairing of meetings to help you plan, structure and manage your meetings effectively.

• Non-executive directors including chairs

• Senior executives and managers.

Course objectives

• Examine the essentials of chairing meetings including:

  • Meeting preparation

  • Ensuring your agendas are appropriately prioritised and reports are fit for purpose

  • Being clear about the purpose of the forum and getting the correct membership to facilitate the delivery of objectives

  • Creating a safe, inclusive environment that allows each member to participate in appropriate debate and decision making

  • Effectively summarising the debate and clearly articulating actions.

• Develop your understanding of the importance of building relationships to encourage effective meetings

• Develop skills to deal with difficult meeting behaviours

• Deliver practical exercises enabling you to practice your approach to chairing meetings

• Provides the opportunity for you to meet and network with peers to discuss common issues and potential solutions.

Virtual course format

This course is a full day event running in two sections across one day. The course will be delivered on Zoom. Estimated timings are: 

Section one: 9.30am-12.15pm 

Section two: 1.30-4.00pm
