Course overview

The board has overall responsibility and accountability for risk. For boards to discharge their role effectively members need to have a basic understanding of risk and risk management.

Used effectively, risk management is a useful management tool to help ensure that not only does the board and its committees focus on the right things, but it should also provide comprehensive assurance that risks are being managed to the best of the organisation’s ability.

This training provides a practical view of what board members and board stakeholders need to know about risk management to help demystify risk; ensure that risks are captured and articulated appropriately; and demonstrate that risk reporting should focus on the management of risk as opposed to the risk itself.

This training is not a deeply theoretical course on the technical aspects of risk management.

• Executive risk leads
• Those tasked with preparing board assurance frameworks and risk register reports for boards and committees.

Course objectives

• Refresh your understanding of the key principles of risk management including risk identification, risk articulation, risk scoring and risk mitigation

• Demonstrate that effective risk reporting should focus on the management of risk as opposed to the risk itself

• Ensure the right focus is retained when appraising the effectiveness of your organisation’s management of risk

• Review the role of risk appetite in the assessment of risk and how risk appetite can be used to support day to day risk management

• Enable you to form a view of how effective the risk management framework is in your own organisation

• Provides the opportunity for you to meet and network with peers to discuss common problems and explore solutions.

Virtual course format

This course is a full day event running in two sections across one day. The course will be delivered on Zoom. Estimated timings are: 

Section one: 9.30am - 12.15pm 

Section two: 1.30pm - 4.00pm
