North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) provides hospital and community healthcare to the residents of Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset, as well as being a regional centre for neurosciences, plastics, burns, orthopaedics and renal.
They employ over 13,000 staff and deliver a range of services to a core population of around 750,000 people. They are also a major research centre and teaching trust, having close links to the Universities of Bristol, Bath, and the West of England.
NBT use an improvement methodology called 'Patient First' which is based on A3 thinking which is a structured problem-solving method that recommends going through various stages such as analysing a problem, identifying root causes, and proposing solutions. This has been in place for the last two years. NBT has developed its strategic objectives using the Patient First methodology. This involves clearly defined trust objectives underpinned by five improvement priorities aligned to NBT values. Their five improvement priorities are:
- High quality care
- Innovation to improve
- Sustainability
- People
- Commitment to our community
Patient First enables the trust to build a culture of continuous improvement by equipping all their staff with the tools and knowledge needed to be innovative and make changes in their work to give the best quality of care to patients. The trust board are solution focused and welcoming of new ways of working which drive quality improvement.
