Course overview
This practical training programme is for aspiring NHS executive directors. The programme combines the two essential criteria for any executive director:
- The theory around the governance and corporate requirements of the role
- The self-development and leadership skills required to develop an individual's impact and behaviour.
This course consists of six full day modules delivered in-person. The intention is to develop a peer learning network within the training cohort; therefore, it is expected that each delegate attends all modules as part of the training. By booking on to this course, you are booking to attend each of the six days within the training. The dates for the next cohort are:
- Module 1: Friday 13 September 2024 (10.00am-4.00pm, in-person event in London)
- Module 2: Friday 25 October 2024 (10.00am-4.00pm, in-person event in London)
- Module 3: Friday 29 November 2024 (10.00am-4.00pm, in-person event in London)
- Module 4: Friday 17 January 2025 (10.00am-4.00pm, in-person event in London)
- Module 5: Friday 28 February 2025 (10.00am-4.00pm, in-person event in London)
- Module 6: Friday 28 March 2025 (10.00am-4.00pm, in-person event in London)
By taking part in the programme, alongside attending the six training dates, delegates will also have access to:
- Pre-course: Each delegate will be expected to complete a 360-degree feedback tool followed by an individual discussion with an experienced facilitator on what the outputs from this tool means for you as an individual and your development areas. The 360-tool will be referenced throughout the programme.
- Three personal online support sessions with an experienced coach to be undertaken between modules and completed by the end of the programme.
- Encouraged to undertake journaling whilst partaking in the programme to help build self-awareness and self-learning into your leadership practice.

Course objectives:
The aim of this multi-module training programme is to equip aspiring directors with the knowledge, skills, and self-awareness in preparation to apply for an executive director role in the NHS. The six modules of the course are:
- Programme introduction and the NHS context
- Understanding board governance and how to be effective
- Inclusive, high performing teams and decision making
- Effective meetings
- Strategic influence and system leadership
- Preparing to enter the board arena.
The programme will also provide delegates with the opportunity to meet and network with peers to discuss common issues and potential solutions.

Programme format:
This training programme consists of six full day events delivered in-person in London between April 2024 and November 2024. Delegates are expected to attend all six training dates and undertake the 360-degree feedback tool and online coaching sessions alongside the training.
Estimated timings for each training event are 10.00am - 4.00pm.
