Empowering leaders to address race inequity with confidence

Despite successive initiatives, NHS data continues to show ongoing racial injustice affecting staff, patients and service users.

This programme offers a data-led approach and practical support by sharing research, case studies and lived experiences through a range of events and resources – helping you take action in areas such as:

  • Leadership accountability: Understand how clear accountability at every level supports meaningful and defined outcomes, with practical insight into how others have embedded it at provider and system-wide level.
  • Inclusive recruitment, retention and talent management: Build diverse leadership pipelines and improve the retention of ethnic minority staff by applying inclusive, equitable processes. Get practical help to improve staff experience and confidently support internationally educated colleagues.
  • Allyship: Strengthen your understanding of anti-racism and gain practical examples of why and how to act. Build the confidence and capability to embed race equality as core business across your organisation.
  • Creating safe spaces for conversation about race: Increase awareness and understanding of racism in the NHS by taking part in peer learning and facilitated conversations.
  • Tackling health inequalities: Understand how racialised inequalities can worsen disparities in access to care and health outcomes. Use this knowledge to inform action and reduce inequality across your services.

Theory of change

Based on our conversations with ethnic minority and white trust leaders, we believe three things are needed for meaningful change:

Hearts and minds change

By building awareness and understanding of race equality, we can create more safe spaces for ethnic minorities, commit to having difficult conversations, promote change and challenge racism.

Confidence and capability to act

Providing leaders with examples on 'why' and 'how' to act will give them the confidence and capability to embed race equality as core business within their organisation.

Taking accountability

By sharing good practice and building understanding of role specific accountability, our events and resources will enable trust leaders to ask challenging questions of themselves and each other, encourage self-reflection, continuous education and catalyse action.

It was an amazing session. The lived experiences, views, projects and questions raised were all very useful. I will be able to utilise what I have learnt here to bring some ideas to my own network to improve the staff experiences at my trust.
