Specialist skills module

Our specialist modules include:

Accountability and holding to account module

This one day specialist course will help governors build a dynamic and effective accountability relationship with their board of directors. Using a range of interactive learning methods, we will look at how governors can be effective in holding their non-executive directors to account for board performance.

Effective questioning and challenge module

This one day specialist course will help governors work confidently and effectively with their directors in posing effective questions to hold the board to account. Using a range of interactive learning methods, we will look at listening skills, questioning styles, and how to frame effective questions, specifically within the context of the governor role.

NHS finance and business skills module

This one day specialist course will use interactive learning methods to help governors learn more about the detail of a provider's finances and business operations, viewed specifically in the context of the governor role. It will look at funding flows, analysing financial information and asking questions of the financial reports, along with external factors which impact the way governors work with their trusts.

Recruitment: the governor role in non-executive appointments module

This one day specialist course helps governors to understand the process, procedures and current legislation for the appointment of non-executive directors and the Chair. It also provides the opportunity to practice formulating interview questions, and to participate in a mock interview.

Member and public engagement module

Governors have an important role in making an NHS foundation trust publicly accountable for the services it provides, and it is the duty of the council of governors to represent the interests of NHS foundation trust members and the public. This training explores what this representation means, and reflects on ways to build effective relationships in order to present the public’s views to the board.  You will also have a chance to share good practice with your peers and reflect on how you can support engagement activities within your trust.

Effective chairing for governors module

Foundation trust governors attend and often chair a variety of meetings/groups, which when chaired and conducted well, help trusts to achieve their objectives in a more timely way. By introducing some relatively simple changes to the way governors plan, structure and manage meetings, significant gains and benefits can be achieved for patients and service users.
