Overview

Demystify risk for more effective leadership

This one-day course is designed for NHS board members who want to improve how they understand, oversee, and discuss risk. You will explore how to strengthen risk conversations, set the right tone for your organisation’s risk culture, and ensure that risks are properly identified, escalated, and managed.

Through expert input, you will deepen your understanding of board assurance frameworks, risk appetite, and the board’s critical role in risk oversight and governance.

Key takeaways
  1. Understand your role in overseeing risk, assurance, and internal controls at board level.
  2. Explore how to use the board assurance framework (BAF) to support stronger decision-making.
  3. Learn how to set and communicate your organisation’s risk appetite.
  4. Strengthen your ability to have clearer, more effective risk discussions.
  5. Build your confidence in supporting a positive risk culture across your organisation.

Really enjoyed the course, the content was perfectly pitched and paced, easy to follow and educational. I feel equipped to go back to our Board and have challenging but constructive conversations about what we do now and how we can improve. Thank you.

Why this matters

Good risk management is essential to safe, sustainable care and strong organisational performance. As a board member, you have a key role in making sure risks are recognised, escalated, and managed effectively. In today’s complex NHS landscape, boards are expected to have a clear grip on risks — not just record them, but act on them. This course helps you strengthen your oversight, challenge, and support for better outcomes.

What we'll cover

  • A refresher on the key principles of risk management, including: identification, articulation, scoring and mitigation
  • How to ensure the right focus is retained when appraising the effectiveness of your organisation's management of risk.
  • The role of risk appetite in the assessment of risk, and how it can be used to support day-to-day risk management.
  • Guidance on how to determine how effective the risk management framework is in your organisation.

The course runs from 9:30am to 4pm (subject to change).

Sophie Guest is a governance and risk specialist with 16 years' experience supporting a broad range of organisations in both the private and charity sectors. Her particular interest lies in acting as a change agent to support organisations with low maturity to develop their governance, risk and compliance frameworks. She has worked both as a management consultant, and within in-house risk functions, so understands how to balance best practice theory with practical implementation. Sophie currently works at a healthcare charity where her focus is on developing the risk management framework and providing assurance to the board so that they are sighted on the key risks, and understand how well these are being managed.

It's a great foundation into risk management principles, for someone who has never received formalised training. I found the content easy to follow and allowed me to confirm my existing knowledge but also receive tips on how to improve local processes in my organisation.
