Overview

Supporting your governors to hit the ground running

This course gives new or early-stage governors a clear introduction to their role and responsibilities within NHS foundation trusts. Covering the structure of the NHS, the statutory duties of governors, and the importance of healthcare quality, this session builds on your trust’s induction to help governors step into their role with greater clarity, confidence and connection.

Whether they’re just starting out or in need of a refresher, this course helps your governors develop a strong foundation for effective contribution.

Key takeaways
  1. Understand the structure of the NHS and where their role fits within it.
  2. Gain clarity on the statutory duties and responsibilities of governors.
  3. Strengthen their understanding of NHS quality and why it matters.
  4.  Build confidence to engage more meaningfully in council activity.
  5. Connect and share learning with peers from other trusts.

Why this matters

Governors play a key role in holding the board to account and representing the public interest — but they need the right knowledge from the start. This course supports early development and sets clear expectations, helping governors engage with greater purpose and make informed contributions from the outset. When your governors are equipped to ask the right questions and understand their responsibilities, your board is better supported, and your trust benefits from stronger, more inclusive oversight.

Overall a very useful session and genuinely probably the best NHS related training I have ever attended.
