The NHS Alliance reacts to BMA strike confirmation

2 April 2026

The NHS Alliance reacts to the news that in spite of the Prime Minister's calls for the BMA to reconsider a government deal to increase pay and boost training places, its Resident Doctors Committee has confirmed that Industrial Action will go ahead.

Commenting on the BMA’s Resident Doctor’s Committee’s decision to resume strike action after the Prime Minister urged them to reconsider a deal increasing pay and training places, the Director of the Acute Network at the NHS Alliance, Rory Deighton said:

“Even now there’s time for cool heads to prevail to prevent a strike that’s bad for patients, staff and the NHS.

“The disruption, division and cost surely mean every avenue must be explored.

“With so much at stake, we urge both sides to take constructive steps to find a way through.

“If the government restores the full package, including the training posts, and the BMA agrees to put the deal to its members ahead of any walkout, there may there may yet be a chance to end this damaging dispute.

“It’s got to be worth a try.”
