Responding to the vote by resident doctors in support of further strike action the chief executive of NHS Providers, Daniel Elkeles, said:
"This vote shows once again the strength of concerns felt by resident doctors over a range of issues including their pay.
"Trust leaders get that, and recognise the need to ensure resident doctors feel listened to, valued and supported.
"Initiatives like the current review of resident doctors’ training hold out the prospect of real progress to improve their working lives and wellbeing.
"A return to industrial action would be a huge setback – bad for patients, for staff and for the NHS.
"Now is a time for cool heads and constructive dialogue, working together to secure a better deal and a better future for resident doctors."
