Responding to Wes Streeting’s speech at ConfedExpo the chief executive of NHS Providers, Daniel Elkeles said:
“The secretary of state offered a positive and compelling vision for the NHS, emphasising clarity about the role, purpose and priorities for different parts of the system.
“It was particularly heartening to hear his praise for foundation trusts and his desire to ‘reinvent’ them for the modern age.
“This could herald increased autonomy with freedom to innovate and build on success, alongside greater transparency and public accountability for performance.
“That is a winning formula.
“It will be important that incentives and penalties are designed to keep patients safe, reward improvement and encourage great leaders to join and stay in the NHS.
“Following the spending review announcement, it was also encouraging to hear the secretary of state acknowledge the importance of capital investment to improve productivity, and his interest in developing new sources of funding.
“We look forward to working with him on that.”
