Our GovernWell programme is delivered by a number of facilitators who are experts in their field of work. Find out who these trainers are and how they contribute to the programme.

 

Trainer Bio

Kim leads the NHS Providers’ development and engagement team and currently job shares this role with Nikki Coleman.

She is a longstanding member of the NHS Providers senior team. A radiographer and clinical teacher and trainer by background, she also has extensive experience of NHS management and leadership, governance and in developing the role of NHS foundation trust governors.

This led her with FT colleagues to developing the national training programme for FT governors which is now in its 10th year.Kim continues to train governors through this programme and is a passionate advocate of the foundation trust model, governors and public engagement more broadly.

Carly joined NHS Providers in 2006, as part of our programme supporting trusts in their foundation trust applications. She then spent two years working as a membership manager in a mental health trust, where she recruited and engaged members through the trust’s FT consultation and beyond.

 

Since returning to NHS Providers, Carly has led various programmes and is now a Member Development Manager, where she is involved in various projects, including oversight of the events and conferences team, coordinating our Trusts in Systems support, as well as a chairing our governor workshops and delivery of our member and public engagement training for governors.

Louise joined NHS Providers as a Member Development Manager in November 2021.  Prior to that she had an NHS career spanning almost 30 years, 15 of which were at a senior management level. 

 

Louise holds a masters degree in mental health law, policy and practice, and post-grad qualifications in healthcare governance.  During her NHS career, Louise led on a range of corporate governance functions, working alongside Board members and governors. 

 

Since joining NHS Providers, Louise holds a varied portfolio of work, which includes the provision of training on both the Board and GovernWell development programmes, predominantly our ‘Effective Board’ offer and Core Skills for Governors.

Member Development Manager

Mark is responsible for the programme of support and development for NHS foundation trust councils of governors at NHS Providers.

 

Before joining NHS Providers Mark spent over 30 years as an NHS manager, more than 20 of which working at director level, in four different parts of the country. Most recently Mark was Foundation Trust Programme Director and Company Secretary for the Isle of Wight NHS Trust 2013-2017.

Mark has an MBA (Health Executive) from Keele University and a coaching and mentoring qualification from the Chartered Management Institute.

He also spent nearly 10 years as the chair of a local education trust responsible for two 11-18 age schools

Brian works in the private sector as an independent consultant primarily in the global automotive sector. In the NHS he has been a non executive director since 2002. For nine years Brian was Chairman of the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust and is currently NED and Chair of Audit at Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health NHS Partnership Trust and a Specialist Advisor with the CQC.

 

Brian’s industrial experience includes global business development, managing businesses in UK, Czech Republic and Portugal and development of a major automotive division of a UK plc. He has established of a number of international strategic alliances in a range of countries including Brazil, Mexico, Israel, Romania and Turkey. In the education and training sector, Brian is Module Lead and co-wrote the HFMA Diploma in Advanced Primary Care Management - Personal Effectiveness and Leadership postgraduate module. He is also an associate lecturer at the Open University formerly on the Mary Seacole Programme and currently Practice Tutor for the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship. Brian has an MBA from the University of Bath and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (FCMA) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Carol is an experienced Board Director and Organisation Development Specialist whose career spans 40 years across various sectors.

 

Carol first operated in the private sector enjoying senior positions in GMAC-RFC, The Automobile Association, Sainsbury’s, and Top Shop.

 

Between 2005 and 2019, Carol held a portfolio of Non-executive director positions: - 

    • In Health she served as Chair of Hampshire Partnership NHS FT for 6 years (mental health and learning disabilities) then went as Vice Chair Hillingdon NHS FT for 5 years (acute general) followed by becoming Chair of Wiltshire Health and Care LLP (community services) for 3 years. 
    • In the housing sector she was Group Chair of Radian Housing for 6 years leading them to a major merger to create Abri Housing before she stepped down. 
    • In the voluntary sector Carol remains Chair of Basingstoke Voluntary Action, a member infrastructure organisation supporting the VCSE sector across Basingstoke and Deane. 

 

In 2020 she trained as a Professional Celebrant and now writes and leads funeral and wedding ceremonies and also works as an Associate Trainer with NHS Providers. She serves as a Presiding Justice in Adult and Youth Courts across North Hampshire and is this year’s President of Basingstoke Loddon Rotary.

 

Carol lives in Basingstoke is a proud mother of two sons of 29 and 26 and welcomed her first granddaughter in 2021.

Trainer bio

David is an independent governance consultant with an MA in Social Policy. He is an experienced senior manager who has worked within NHS Trusts; Clinical Commissioning Groups and NHS regulation. He has also fulfilled non-executive and trustee roles within the NHS and Charitable sector. Previous to working with and within the NHS, David was a Social Policy lecturer for 17 years in Further and Higher Education.

 

Career Highlights have been: - 

  • Working with the Commission for Health Improvement leading inspection teams that completed clinical governance reports for NHS Trusts and Health Authorities throughout England and Wales. 
  • Supporting the Chief Executives and Chairs of Ealing Hospital and North West London Hospitals NHS Trust in assisting both Boards during the merger process to create London North West Healthcare NHS Trust   
  • Chair of two Charities: One supporting Student life at the Univeristy of Hertfordshire and the other supporting Homeless individuals by developing links with the Arts Community in Oxford 
  • Presently David, as well as his governance support role is a Trustee of the University of Keele Postgraduate Association.

Gill is an experienced NHS corporate governance professional, specialising in working with and supporting NHS foundation trust boards and council of governors.  She is a passionate advocate of good governance practice to ensure compliance with legal, constitutional, and regulatory requirements within NHS organisations.  Gill hold a master’s degree in Economics and the Chartered Governance Institute’s Advanced Certificate in Health Service Governance.

 

Gill is also an ILM qualified coach, delivering a coaching approach aimed at valuing individuals within a positive and supportive environment.

 

Gill’s personal passion is teaching Pilates within group and 1:1 settings, specifically offering a contemporary clinical method of practice to help people improve their physical and mental wellbeing.

Jit Jethwa is an experienced trainer, integral coach and assessment professional. He works with organisations to deliver leadership development but also supports recruitment and assessment activities at all levels but particularly at C-Suite level. He regularly sits on Interview and assessment panels as an Independent Panel Member to support recruitment of Non-Executive Director and Executive Director positions. He has a strong focus on Equality, Diversity and Inclusiveness at an organisational level. He has been an Independent Panel Member for the Appointments Commission supporting recruitment of NED’s for NHS Trust Boards. He has also supported Board recruitment for NHS Foundation Trusts as well as for various central government departments and in local authorities.

 

He has supported organisations in the public, private, education and not for profit sectors. He is particularly focussed on supporting organisations to ensure they make the right recruitment decisions for their needs.

 

He provides tailored support and services to organisations to focus on cultural change which allows them to become more agile, focussed and driven to remain successful and grow during periods of significant change and challenge.

Trainer Bio

Lynda has over 26 years experience of working in the NHS, part of which was as a Head of Corporate Governance and Legal Services/Company Secretary. During this time, Lynda has taken minutes for all levels of meetings from team and department level to Board/Governors and partnership meetings.

 

Lynda worked on various elements of the acquisition of Scarborough & North East Yorkshire Healthcare NHS Trust by York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust getting involved with the Cooperation and Competition Panel responses and working on the development of strategies with corporate and clinical departments. 

 

Lynda is interested in effective governance and streamlining processes which simplify areas, but also retain the level of corporate detail required. Lynda is now the Chair of Governors for a local Primary School, chairing both the full Governing Body and the Business and Resources meetings.

Neil has over 35 years experience in NHS management. Prior to his retirement in 2016 he had been Assistant CEO at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals for 14 years and immediately prior to that had spent 4 years as a senior civil servant in the Department of Health.

 

Since retirement, Neil has worked extensively in the charitable sector as an adviser, Trustee and currently as Chair of a charity for homeless people. He keeps his hand in within the NHS as an occasional Chair of Consultant appointment panels.
