Governors need to be equipped with the skills to perform their role. Some training will be undertaken by individual trusts, however, recent research by Monitor states that 55% of NHS governors felt they would benefit from further training on practical ways to carry out the statutory role of a governor.GovernWell is the national training programme for foundation trust governors. The programme aims to equip all NHS foundation trust governors with the skills required to fulfil their responsibilities, as set out in the Health and Social Care Act 2012.
Working in partnership with NHS Providers, the NHS Leadership Academy commissioned the GovernWell programme in 2012 as a one-stop resource for foundation trusts to develop their governors' knowledge and skills.
GovernWell is a comprehensive four-tier programme that offers:
- Pre-induction resources - to support trusts to raise awareness and understanding of the governor role.
- An induction toolkit - to support trusts' own induction programmes.
- Core skills module - for those in the first year of their first term of office, and for those governors who require a refresher. The core module builds on a trust's induction when governors are ready to learn in more detail and discuss issues from a position of insight and initial experience in the role.
- Specialist skills modules - these focus on specific aspects of the role and enable governors to explore them in a practical, interactive way to help form the basis for a deeper understanding of their duties.
Each tier of the programme builds on the last, offering governors the opportunity to build their knowledge and skill base to effectively operate in the role.
Governors can choose which parts of the programme best meet their development needs depending on their experience, interest, responsibilities and current level of understanding.
The programme aims to accommodate the many different learning styles, levels and experiences within the governor group across the country by offering a range of teaching and learning methods. Face to face and on-line learning packages will be offered and these will be supplemented by published workbooks and other resources, where appropriate. The face to face training incorporates a range of training methods that encourage participation including group work, role plays and discussion sessions.
"This programme prepares governors for their increasingly responsible role as the Health and Social Care Act 2012 comes into force." (Head of Practice at the NHS Leadership Academy)
