Vanguards: spreading the learning

25 February 2016

NHS Providers, in collaboration with NHS Clinical Commissioners, the Local Government Association and the NHS Confederation is launching today a series of resources to explain the purpose and aims of the vanguards. The launch is part of our work to help spread the learning from the programme throughout the health and care sector.

The resources - an animation and series of factsheets - aim to help health and care staff, patients and the public gain a better understanding of the motivations of the vanguard programme, while explaining some of the innovative work currently making a real difference to people’s lives.

There are currently 50 vanguards across the country, grouped under the following new care models:

Acute care collaboration vanguard sites

Linking local hospitals together to improve their clinical and financial viability

Urgent and emergency care

New approaches to improve the coordination of services and reduce pressure on A&E departments

Enhanced health in care homes

Offering older people better, joined up health, care and rehabilitation services

Multispecialty community providers

Moving specialist care out of hospitals into the community

Integrated primary and acute care systems

Joining up GP, hospital, community and mental health services
